Scope and Contents note

The Student Library Committee records consist of various materials related to the administration, policies, and efforts of the Student Library Committee from 1965 to 1970.Included are meeting minutes, memoranda, and agendas; drafts related to policy and program development; council meeting minutes; correspondence; information related to special projects; and policies and reference materials for the committee’s procedures. Of particular note is the Student Library Committee Reference Guide, a document relating to the development of the committee and its history.

The Administrative series contains materials related to the administrative operations of the committee and its members. The Correspondence series contains materials related to written communication between the committee and outside parties, both on and off campus. The Miscellaneous Projects series contains materials related to singular projects the committee developed during its years of operation. Of particular note is a newsletter, The Fundi, published by the SLC in 1966-1967 and some flyers. The Policies and Procedures series consists of materials related to the committee’s policies for the collections and projects under its jurisdiction. A manual includes information gathered by committee leaders for their successors, such as relevant policies, clippings about past events, and even photographs of the 1966 Library Science Award Dinner.

History

Beginning in the winter semester of 1965, the Student Library Committee (SLC) at Oakland University was developed through the collaboration of Kresge Library and the Office of Student Activities. The committee’s goal was to strengthen the relationship between the library and the student body, allowing the library to better understand and respond to the needs and priorities of their student patrons.
