History

Oakland University's original curriculum gave a significant role to general education as the necessary basis for a liberal arts education. In the first 5 years, "University Courses" were required. In 1965, these were replaced by a new set of general education requirements, including a two-semester seminar course called Freshman Explorations. In 1968, the course catalog referred to general education as "studies in a broad range of liberal arts and sciences", which the university considered "a distinctive and imaginative creation of this University." On June 3, 1982 the University Senate legislated a 36-credit hour minimum general education requirement for all undergraduates. The general education program was revamped again in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
