Biography
Richard Stier was one of MSUO's charter class students. After his Sophomore year at MSUO, he joined the US Marine Corps in September, 1961. He was selected as a candidate to become a Marine Corps Officer through their Platoon Leaders Class (PLC) program. During the summer of 1962 he went through a twelve week Marine boot camp in Quantico, VA. He returned to MSUO for his Senior year and graduated. During the graduation ceremony, he wore a white uniform under the black gown. Minutes after the ceremony, two Captains swore him in as a Second Lieutenant, making him the first person to be commissioned into the military after graduation. He returned to Quantico, then was sent to Camp Lejeune, N.C. By August, 1965, Stier was in an artillery battery (M-4-11, 1st Mar. Div.) that landed in Chu Lai, Viet Nam. He was on the front line for eleven months.
