Biographical note
Fred Phillips attended Oakland University in the late 1960s, graduating with multiple degrees in 1969 and 1971. Phillips served as staff photographer for the University Relations Department from 1967 to 1971, shooting countless photographs for university publications. The majority of these photographs feature depictions of students and faculty members, campus life, commencement and performing arts events, and academic projects.
Phillips was also involved in a number of projects generated by the School of Engineering, most notably the "Oakland Electric," an electric vehicle designed and constructed by students and faculty in the Engineering Department. This project is well-documented within the collection by negatives and slides taken by Phillips, as well as reports and publications describing the pursuit in more detail.
A number of Phillips' photographs were published in advertisements and local newspapers, extending the reach of his capture of Oakland University's first decade to the surrounding area.
