Attic Theatre records

 Collection
Identifier: OU-SC-ATTIC

Scope and Contents note

The Attic Theatre records consists of working documentation, production material, and media for the administration, productions, and recordings created by the Attic Theatre and its personnel. Items included range from 1975 to the early 2000s.

Prior to its accession by Oakland University, the collection was maintained and organized by Samuel Pollak, who served as actor, director, and general manager of the Attic Theatre during various times in its history. Pollak's original organization of the materials has been consciously maintained to the best of ASC's ability, and the materials have retained their intended arrangement. Prior to Pollak's acquisition of the collection, the materials were stored in various locations and subject to various climate conditions. Some materials have sustained mold and/or water damage. Current conditions for the collection are stable.

With respect to Pollak's original process, the collection has been arranged according to naturally-occurring series: Administration, Productions, Artifacts, Oversize, and Audiovisual.

The Administration series contains working documentation related to the theatre's operations, including founding documentation and by-laws, financial statements, planning reports, diagrams, correspondence, and similar documents.

The Productions series contains scripts, production photographs, programs, newsclippings, and other media related to individual productions. The series is arranged chronologically according to individual production title.

The Artifacts series contains a single publication copy of "Theater in Detroit: Plays in the Attic" by Lawrence DeVine.

The Oversize series contains large-sized production memorabilia, including posters, sketches, photographs, and artwork.

The Audiovisual series contains audio and video production and promotional materials recorded on various types of reel-to-reel media. A complete list of included materials is available upon request.

Historical

Formed in 1975 in southeast Michigan, the Attic Theatre was Detroit's leading professional theater company, operating as a non-profit artistic organization devoted to bringing high-quality theater productions to the public.

The company began as a shared creative endeavor developed by nine graduates of Oakland University's Academy of Dramatic Arts program. Originally based in Ann Arbor and operating as a traveling troupe called Roadside Attractions, Inc., the theatre found a permanent home in Detroit's Greektown area in 1976. The theatre continued to perform locally from their Greektown location until 1984, when the building was damaged by fire. Performances continued at several nearby locations until the company was able to relocate to the New Center Pavillion in 1985, where its run continued for many years before its final move to the Strand Theatre in 1990. The company ceased active operation of theatrical productions in late 1997.

This collection was maintained over the last decade by Samuel Pollak, who served as actor, director, and general manager of the Attic Theatre during various parts of his time with the company. Pollak's original arrangement of the collection before its donation to Oakland University's Archives and Special Collections has been maintained, according to accepted archival and institutional practices.
