History

The College of Arts and Sciences was created in May 1965 as part of the university's administrative reorganization from divisions to professional schools and a college. Professor George T. Matthews was appointed Dean of the new College of Arts and Sciences.

Graduate programs were started in 1965-1966, when the English and Mathematics Departments enrolled students in M.A. and M.A.T. programs in conjunction with the School of Education, and the Chemistry Department offered the first courses leading to a M.S. The College also innovated with area studies, especially its Asian studies program, and established a Center for Asian Studies in 1965-1966. A Chinese major was created in Fall 1968. New undergraduate and graduate programs were added consistently over the years with the except of the classics department, which was terminated in 1977.

From the start the College has been the largest academic unit at Oakland University.
