History
A Center for International Programs was set up at Oakland University in 1984, housed within the College of Arts and Sciences, to provide a stronger infrastructure for the university's activities in the field of international studies. Since its inception, OU had strongly committed to teaching in fields related to international studies and offered courses and programs in area studies. The Center offered undergraduate majors in International Studies with speciailzations in Africa, East Asia (China and Japan), South Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America. The Center also included the Study Abroad office. The 1999 "Creating the Future" strategic planning initiative called for a holistic Center that would expand on the Center for International Programs. The goal was to create an integrated structure to recruit and support international students, provide international opportunities to OU students and faculty, and add credit and non credit offerings to the curriculum. In 2012, the name was changed to International Studies Program.
