Scope and Contents note
The Lowell Eklund paper document one specific aspect of his work while at Oakland University: his involvement with the Oakland County Commission on Economic Opportunity set up in 1964. The collection includes correspondence, agendas and meeting minutes of the Commission's Research and Planning Committee in 1964-1965. There are also files relating to some programs established at the university to respond to the war on poverty.

Biographical note
Lowell R. Eklund was Director and then Dean of Continuing Education at Oakland University starting in 1958. In 1963 alumni relations were added to his portfolio. Thanks to Eklund’s leadership the Division of Continuing Education was very active in community engagement in the 1960s and 1970s. During the Johnson Administration, Eklund brought to OU numerous conferences and programs to study and alleviate poverty. Eklund also served on the Research and Planning Committee of the Oakland County Commission on Economic Opportunity set up in 1964.
