Biographical note

Gary Russi served as vice-president for academic affairs and provost of Oakland University from 1993 to 1995 and was appointed interim president in 1995 when President Packard resigned. In 1996 his appointment was made permanent. He would remain president until 2013 - the longest serving president in the history of Oakland University. Under his leadership, Oakland University grew significantly. Many new buildings were erected (a new Science and Engineering building, a students recreation and athletics center, Elliott Hall of Business, and Pawley Hall among others) and 65 new academic programs created. A strategic plan for 1995-2005 was adopted, helping the university capitalize on the growth of the student body and defining its institutional priorities. In 2005, President Russi led the university's first comprehensive campaign which exceeded its goal of raising 110 million dollars by 2009. It was also during his tenure that Oakland adopted a new mascot, the Grizzly, and moved to NCAA Division I competition.
