History

Until 1964 Oakland University did not have a stable student government organization. A Dormitory Social Council and a Women's Judiciary Board were the main organizations on campus. In February 1964, a Dormitory Council was set up to advise the administration and represent the interests of all resident students ("Residents Ratify Dorm Constitution," Oakland Observer, February 7. 1964 and "4 Women, 8 Men Elected to Dorm Council," Oakland Observer, February 14, 1964). Although its structure changed somewhat over the years, its task was to oversee all the house councils or dorm committees. A commuter council was created in September 1965 to represent non resident students.

In 1968 the Dormitory Council was replaced by an Inter-Hall Council made up of vice-presidents of the respective house councils, as it was found that the Dorm Council duplicated functions of existing house councils ("Dorm Council Proposes New Board," Oakland Observer, December 1, 1967). Starting in fall 1970, students were also represented by an elected Student Congress. ("Another Shot at Student Government," Focus Oakland, September 23, 1970). In 1972, the Inter-Hall Council became the Area Hall Council. The Commuter Council, for its part, lasted into the 1990s before dying out.
