Biographical note
Robert Griffith Hoopes was hired as a professor of English at Michigan State University-Oakland in July 1957, at the age of 36. He held a PhD from Harvard University and had taught at Stanford University. At Oakland University, he served as Dean of the Faculty from 1959 to 1961, Assistant to the Chancellor for University Planning in 1961-1963, and chair of the English Department until 1969, when he left for a position at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
